What is a Boeing 747?

The Boeing 747, commonly referred to as the “Jumbo Jet,” is one of the most iconic commercial airliners in history. Designed by Boeing’s engineer Joe Sutter, the first 747 took to the skies for the first time on February 9, 1969, and has since become a ubiquitous sight at airports worldwide.

Overview and Definition

The 747-8 Intercontinental, which is the latest iteration of the aircraft family, measures over 232 feet casino 747 (70 meters) in length, spans 195 feet (59.5 meters), and stands over 62 feet (18.9 meters) tall from nose to tail. The massive size of the plane belies its impressive efficiency, with a range of up to 8,000 nautical miles (14,800 kilometers). Design Philosophy

Boeing engineers drew inspiration from various sources when designing the 747. They examined existing commercial airliners like the Boeing 707-320 and Douglas DC-8-63, as well as military aircraft such as the KC-135 Stratotanker, to create a hybrid of efficiency and capacity. The initial concept involved adding extra fuel tanks to an existing design but eventually evolved into a clean-sheet approach.

The resulting “wide-body” configuration featured two passenger cabins on top of one another: the upper deck housed business or first-class passengers, while the lower cabin contained economy class seats. This innovative layout would become the hallmark of subsequent wide-body aircraft designs.

How it Works

When in operation, four massive General Electric GE90 engines propel the 747 through the skies at a speed of up to Mach .855 (647 mph), depending on altitude and mission requirements. The plane is capable of flying high enough that its upper deck can stay above typical weather systems for long periods.

Types or Variations

Throughout its development, Boeing has introduced various iterations of the 747 family. These have included:

    • 747-100 : the original model with two General Electric CF6 engines
    • 747-200 : an upgraded variant also powered by GE CF6 engines
    • 747-300 : fitted with more powerful Pratt & Whitney PW4050 turbofans, which led to increased payload capacity
    • 747-400 : the most-produced version of all Boeing 747 variants; this was a derivative featuring larger General Electric GE90 engines and improved aerodynamics.
  • The latest model is known as the “747 Max” variant however there are still various regional configurations available for commercial operations which include short-range models "mini-boeing".
